About Rowan
I Love Stories:
Ever since I was a little boy I was obsessed with the larger-than-life characters found in comic books or on Saturday morning cartoons. Characters like Spider-Man or Son Goku inspired me to be a better person, and I knew I wanted to make characters who could do the same for others. I’ve always known I wanted to be a writer, but I never could have guessed where that desire was going to take me.
From Humble Beginnings:
While I was raised in a very happy and loving home, my family has always struggled with financial instability. My father was a high-school drop-out with no money to his name and two children that he had to parent all by himself. I truly respect how hard he worked to make a good life for my sister and me. Working two jobs, going back to school to get his associate’s degree, and keeping his two little rascals fed and out of trouble seems like an olympian feat considering how young he was. Growing up, my sister and I noticed how our friends had so much more than we did. Nice clothes, rides to school, cell phones, you name it. I grew up wishing I could help more. Wishing there was something I could do to lift the burden, so as soon as I was old enough to get a job that’s exactly what I did.
After working numerous customer service jobs I found I had an unmatched work ethic and a knack for getting strangers to tip me. I sought a job that would reward my extra work and naturally found my way onto a sales floor. I worked at an AT&T retailer, and even though I was the youngest on the team, I was given the position of assistant manager. I got my two years of sales experience and then got an even better sales job selling door-to-door for Comcast, our direct competitor. The tips, tricks, and thick skin I developed going door-to-door have been indispensable in my life going forward. It’s a challenge I think any entrepreneur should go through.
How Success Lead to Service:
After finding success in sales I decided to travel before I really settled down into a career job. On my travels, I met a woman who explained to me that her birthday was coming up and how she was going to donate it to a non-profit that establishes access to clean water for underdeveloped communities around the world. I’m very practical, and a bit of a minimalist, so the idea of avoiding the cheap bobbles and trinkets and having something meaningful done on my birthday instead was incredible. I sent a message out to my whole family and had each of them donate my years in dollars to Charity: water and we raised over $200. I was so excited about it, that the next year I decided to use my sales skills to see if I could raise over a thousand. I did my research and wrote my first piece of copy about how the non-profit had changed the life of a struggling mother in a small village in northern Uganda. I raised well over my goal of $1,000 and wondered how much I would be able to raise if I had more training and a larger platform. I purchased the Accelerated Program for Seven-Figure Copywriting by the American Writers & Artists Institute (AWAI), and the rest is history.
